Two years ago, the Garcias offered L’Atelier the opportunity to use a small amount of their coveted Pelo de Oro from one of their farms, and they wasted no time seizing the opportunity to create something extremely special.
Thus, Côte d'Or was born.
The naming of the project pays homage to the famed Burgundy wine growing region in France known for growing Pinot Noir, one of the most temperamental grape varietals. Pelo de Oro is a very temperamental tobacco plant, requiring a lot of hands on care and it is also extremely subjective to the environment in which it is grown. With both Pelo de Oro and Pinot Noir, the yields are low, but the resulting products are very special. Côte d'Or, which translates roughly to “Gold Coast” made for a classic name given the translation of Pelo de Oro as “Hair of Gold” and the similarities between growing Pinot Noir and Pelo de Oro.
Sancti Spiritus is a hybrid of Criollo and Pelo de Oro. For 2017, the team at L’Atelier decided to use the darker priming Sancti Spiritus wrappers that were used for the project in 2015. The added flavor depth provided by incorporating the Pelo de Oro in the blend accents the darker wrapper beautifully. The resulting profile for Côte d'Or is complex, rich and rewarding. Knowing that this would be an extremely small run this year, the 7x47 size that was introduced in 2015 is being used again.
Total production for Côte d'Or will be 1,000 ten count boxes (10,000 cigars)
